Chiefly Bacon’s Lazy Big Board: Defensive Line

While the signing of Bennie Logan makes this less of a need, Chiefs would still do well to secure options for the future. Logan and Howard are both in contract years, while Allen Bailey is coming off his first significant injury. This is not a great draft to add Dline talent, which is kind of to be expected. Last year was a great draft and Chiefs stole Chris Jones at the top of the 2nd round. This year, Dorsey will have to hope the right player falls to them at the right time. There are still a few options worth considering.

Pick 27 DL: None

Unless you are picking in the top 10, DL is probably not a good choice in the first round this year. Allen is great, but nobody else is a day one starter who can both rush the passer and stop the run at a high level.

Pick 59 NT/DE Elijah Qualls 6′1 313lbs

Qualls has great strength and a powerful punch. Handles double teams and dominates one on ones. Lack of length puts a ceiling on him for the NFL and he has some bad weight, but he’s a guy you can play as a NT, or get his weight down and have him play 3-tech. He’s better against the run than the pass, but he has enough movement ability to develop a pass rush with time. Fits well as a rotation NT or DE for the Chiefs this year.

Pick 91 DE/DT Jaleel Johnson 6’3” 316lbs

Johnson has a nice first step and a great motor. Never takes a play off, always fighting till the whistle, doesn’t give up or stop churning. Despite a lack of straight line speed, very quick with the ability to bend and work his way through the line. Not as big of a base as you would like. Best fit with the Chiefs is at DE till he gets his body in a little better shape. Had a really nice senior bowl, but, keep in mind, the Oline class is not that great. Not likely to be an elite player, but he’ll try hard, develop quick and give you a solid rotational player with some pass rush ability.

Pick 104 DT/DE Larry Ogunjobi 63” 305lbs

High character guy. Very thick in his base. Strong, quick player who can be quite productive. Lacks ideal size for the NFL. Arms aren’t the longest and he could stand to add some weight as well. He‘s not an every down player right away, but he has the potential to be a disruptive DE with the strength to take some snaps at DT in the dime defense.

Pick 132 DE Eddie Vanderdoes 6′3” 305lbs

A lot of people will look at him as a run stuffer or a NT, but I think you’ll have more success if you move him to DE and let him drop a little weight. He used to be a really dynamic athlete who could rush the passer, but an ACL tear and some bad weight have held him back. Dropping the weight could help take some strain off the knee and give him his old pop back. Vanderdoes could turn into a steal if Chiefs handle him right and the medicals check out.

Pick 170 or 180 DT Jarron Jones 6′6” 316lbs

Jones has elite size and length, along with some pretty intriguing athletic traits, but he’s inconsistent. Has dealt with a number of injuries in college, and NFL scouts question how much he loves the game. Chiefs took a chance on Chris Jones, who had a rep of being lazy, and it has paid off big thus far. If Dorsey is happy with the digging he does on Jones, Chiefs could snag another player much lower in the draft than he would normally be available.

Pick 216 or 218 NT Josh Augusta 6′4 365lbs

Noticeably the biggest player on the field. Huge frame. Obvious fit at NT. More potential than polish right now. Struggles to keep his weight down, and plays poorly when he doesn’t. Needs to be coached up and motivated to reach his potential and you might not want him in your rotation for a year or two. Augusta is more likely to bust than boom, but at his size, and this late in the draft, Chiefs could do worse than take a chance on a guy with his traits. (No Workout)

Pick 245 NT Josh Tupou 6′3” 253lbs

Moldable NT prospect who is still pretty raw. Possesses good athleticism for his size and nice strength. Didn’t post amazing college production, but the tools are there for a good NFL coach to work with. Might need a year on the practice squad and a year at the bottom of the depth chart before he starts to make much of an impact, but if things click quickly for him under Britt Reid, he could work his way onto the roster this year. (No Combine Workout)

The D-line talent is nothing compared to last year, but there are a few guys who could develop into rotational pieces or average starters. It’s not hard to see why Dorsey snapped up Logan. Healthy or not, he’s light years ahead of anyone they could get in this draft.
