Chiefs: 2021 Preseason Opener, OPEN THREAD

Tonight the Kansas City Chiefs will send their team up against the 49ers in San Francisco at Levi Stadium. You may remember the last time these two teams met, in Super Bowl LIV. I put together a few clips from that game to help remind you. The game basically started with 7:13 left in the 4th quarter when Patrick Mahomes had asked OC, Eric Bieniemy the question that shall now live on as an eternal Chiefs legend, “Do we have time to run WASP?”

.

Yes, I know I missed a great catch by Sammy Watkins which set up the Chiefs second TD in this series, but I wasn’t about to go back and add it. Sorry. BTW, I’m still of the firm opinion that Damien Williams had the ball stretched over the goal line when his foot touched the out of bounds line. In the shot below, he had not yet put his foot down, which means, he had a touchdown! Anyway, they said it was too close to call, but he still had a TD, in my heart of hearts. Also, Damien Williams should have at least gotten consideration as the Super Bowl LIV MVP.

On to the 2021 Season, and Preseason Games

The way the snaps will be handled by Andy Reid, in tonight’s game, will have the 1st team taking the 1st quarter, the 2nd team taking the 2nd quarter, and so on.

.

Since fans may have a difficult time deciphering the 1st, from the 2nd from the 3rd teams… here’s the Chiefs first depth chart provided by Matt Derrick earlier this week (the 1st team is in the first column on the left, the second team in the next column…):

Note: on this chart, rookies, including UDFAs, are all underlined.

Communication Inflation

Both Patrick Mahomes and Tyrann Mathieu mentioned the importance of “communication” in their post practice press conferences on Thursday following the team’s last practice before this game. Mathieu was asked, What will you be looking for in this first preseason game? and replied:

.

“Anytime you take the field you want to keep the other team out of the end zone. I think that’s most importantly. Obviously, [you] want to see the young guys kind of step up, make plays. I think the most important thing, you want to be able to communicate. Obviously, you don’t want any mental errors. So, I’d say those are the things I look for, as a player, when I take the field: how well can I communicate, not having any mental errors, then it’s all about playing fast.” –Tyrann Mathieu

.

Mahomes also talked about what would be a “win” for him in tonight’s game:

Chiefs: Paint By Numbers

Here’s a listing of the Chiefs 90 players. Hopefully this will be helpful in keeping them straight. However, this may be the last time you see some of these player as the first cut down day is next Tuesday.

If you haven’t seen this clip of Dante Hall announcing the Chiefs 2021 Schedule, have a gander. Just seeing Dante Hall get’s me in the mood for Chiefs football:

Like Dante Hall said, “It’s time we go get our trophy back.” Are you ready for some Chiefs football? Oh geez, me too!
