Chiefs and Chargers Game Report

Chiefs and Chargers Game Report

Laddie Morse

This game was a tale of two halves with the second half producing a win for K.C. 27-to-24. The first half was nothing to write home about, a 10-to-7 lead enjoyed by the Los Angeles Chargers was not great football by either team. Many will want to point to the no call on the Joey Bosa low hit on Patrick Mahomes. While I agree that the refs blew that one, I can also see why they thought Andrew Wylie had pulled him down and into Mahomes.

The story of the first half for K.C. can be told by seeing the Kansas City Chiefs PUNTED four times. A friend of mine texted me that it doesn’t get much closer than that and I texted back, “A beautiful ugly win.” The Chiefs PUNTED just twice in the second half so that may tell you something.

The Tale of Two Watsons

.

Both Justin Watson and Jaylen Watson scored a TD in this game. “Chiefs: A Tale of Two Watsons” is also the name of an article written by David Bell on the last day of August earlier this year, here at ArrowheadOne.

.

The Play of the Game

With the Chargers inside the Chiefs four yard line and knocking on the door to score again, CB Jaylen Watson picked off Chargers QB Justin Herbert at the goal line and returned it for a touchdown:

.

.

In a game where first round pick CB Trent McDuffie was missing because he was on the Injured Reserve List, the Chiefs looked like they were missing his services.

.

.

By chance, 7th round pick Jaylen Watson was there to take McDuffie’s place and he was in the right place at the right moment and made a great return to assure a victory.

Quote of the Game

.

“I’m sure PFF will have me at a

low grade after that one.”

-Patrick Mahomes

.

Quote of the Game II

.

“I wish I could play madden the

way mahomes plays football!!!”

-Micah Parsons

.

Even when Mahomes has a bad game, it’s a good game by other’s standards: 24 of 35, 2 TDs and a 106.2 QB rating.

.

Player of the Game

DT Chris Jones has to be the Player of the Game.

.

.

Jones had 3 Tackles, 2 Sacks, 2 Tackles For a Loss (TFLs), 2 QB Hits and he was a constant nuisance for the Chargers.

.

Patrick Mahomes had 2 more passing TDs giving him 7 for the year (after 2 games), but he didn’t have a great game. He looked upset early in the game and although he may have had reason to be upset, it’s not like him to show those kinds of negative emotions. Clyde Edwards-Helaire should get a runner-up vote for Player of the Game. He had 74 running yards and 44 pass receiving yards. That gives him two weeks in a row where he was very, very good. I can also report that the Chiefs player who was not the player of the game was, Bryan Cook. Cook had two critical penalties.

.

Turning Point in the Game

.

Patrick Mahomes “appeared” to have thrown an INT but the Chargers defender trapped the ball against the ground. The offense proceeded to drive down the field and score. That looked like a turning point in this game:

Ton of room for improvement…. oh yes.!

Song of the Game

I’m not sure why I thought of this song… but it does seem to express the fire that the powers that be were attempting to express… while at the same time… the fire was in doubt.

.

“We Didn’t Start the Fire” came out in 1989 and I think that was the same year the Chiefs took Derrick Thomas #4 in the draft. It may have been many years after the team built Arrowhead, but thank goodness we won this game. It was in doubt for three quarters.

.

Ehh, What’s Up (Next) Doc?

The Chiefs won’t be playing now for ten more days. Their next opponent is the Colts in Indianapolis. It’s the Colts who tied the Texans last Sunday 20-to-20… and since it’s been a 100 years ago now that Navy Athletic Director, Tom Hamilton said, “A tie is like kissing your sister”… and since I think it’s important that we not allow our favorite golden sayings to die… and since if you were to ask any fan in Indianapolis if that were true they’d give you a yes emphatically… well, there you have it, for what it’s worth. The Colts play the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Sunday and while they’ve already played in Houston last weekend, their game vs the Chiefs will be their Home opener. That likely makes this a tough game for K.C., especially if the Colts don’t win in Jacksonville. On the other hand, let’s not forget, HC Andy Reid does really well in his next game, after taking time off… and I don’t know about you but, I’d consider ten days = time off.
