Chiefs at Jags: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Chiefs at Jags: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – Today has been a long time coming! Let’s dispense with the formalities of an introduction to today’s article and cut to the chase. The game was good. It was bad. It was ugly.

Looking at The Good

Sammy Watkins

I know that Watkins said that he felt better than he ever has before. However, I thought that was just something that NFL players said on the advice of their agents.

Watkins was otherworldly on Sunday, hauling in a total of nine passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He had three TDs in all of last season. His performance was a masterpiece in the fine art of ‘wide receivery‘ (if there is such a thing).

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes must be the most unintelligent quarterback in the NFL. It’s obvious that our obviously obtuse QB does not understand the word regression. This is the year all the NFL pundits predicted that Mahomes would regress.  Someone forgot to tell him.

Not only did he not regress, last year’s MVP stepped up his game. He looked like a general directing troops out there. Total leadership. Total command. Total control.

Mahomes was 25 of 33 for 378 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a 143.2 Rating. Today’s performance should leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that there’s a new sheriff in town — again — and Patrick Mahomes is his name.

LeSean McCoy

Did McCoy and Coach Reid ever spend any time away from one another? It’s almost like McCoy has been a Chief the entire time that Reid has been our coach.

With 81 yards on ten carries, one has to wonder does the 31-year-old RB ever age?

Gardner Minshew

Hopefully, this is the only time I will ever list another player in the Good category of one of my game reviews, but to not acknowledge the performance of this rookie QB would be a crime. The greenhorn QB came off of the bench in the first quarter after the injury to Fole’s nonplussed. He looked like a veteran quarterback out there, keeping his team in the game will into the second half.

He completed his first 13 passes for a record. His final numbers were incredible for a rookie QB.  22 passes out of 25 attempts for 275 yards and 2 TDs with only one interception is PDG for a rookie. Keep your eye on this one!

The Bad (but not too bad)

Chiefs Defense

The Chiefs Defense showed flashes of brilliance, while cruelly reminding us of Sutton days gone by. The defense forced a fumble while grabbing 1 INT too. More importantly, they turned two, of what would have been touchdowns last year, into just field goals.

Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland picking up a fumble.

However, they gave up over 400 yards in total against a rookie QB. I’d like to see better, but I can live with ‘bend not break’ this early in the season. Will the real Chiefs defense please stand up?

The Ugly (Injuries)

I hate seeing anyone get hurt in a game, Chief or otherwise. On the prettiest touchdown pass ever I’ve seen thrown, Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles suffered a fractured clavicle. I hate to see that. Let’s wish the ex-Chiefs QB a speedy recovery.

Tyreek Hill

The injury to Tyreek Hill worries me. Hospitalized for it, we don’t know for sure how long he’s out for.  I just want him back out there.

Patrick Mahomes

Mr. Mahomes, no look passes are great, just not in the red zone!

Unsportsmanlike Players

I planned on lighting into you-know-who here. However, based on his conduct, unprofessionalism, and total lack of respect for the game, he deserves no mention, thus gets none. I hope his momma raised him better than that. If she, in fact, did, he should be ashamed.

Actually, I do recollect the name. Myles Jack. However, I think they have two players with that last name. I’d look it up, but I’m too tired. I’d guess, but then I might be wrong. That would be worse. Then it would be me that’s one Jack off.

A win is a win.  I’ll take it, although I wish the injuries had not happened. Not to Foles, nor to Hill, but football is a physical game, and injuries are inherent to a physical sport such as football. I love that football is back. I love that the Chiefs are back.

I love that we get to live this life of pontificating about a game in which we will not play nor take part in for an entire week so we can watch a mere sixty minutes of what we’ve discussed and argued about all week.

Seems almost pointless, doesn’t it? So, are you guys ready to start the conversation about the Raiders?

Worthless Award: Each game I review, I’ll issue an award. I’m not sure of the award name let alone what it’s given for, nor who it’s given to. However,  it should be fun.

We present the “Never Let Them See You Sweat” Award to Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt. Despite having to punt once and serve as placeholder on four extra points and four field goals, Colquitt neither perspired, tired, nor complained. He handled his duties as a true Chief and is thus worthy of the coveted “Never Let Them See You Sweat” Award.  Congratulations, Dustin!
