Chiefs Beat the 49ers in a Squeaker

It took over time but the Kansas City Chiefs whipped the San Francisco 49ers in the end. I love what Patrick Mahomes said after the game,

Of course, you can’t quote anyone on the Chiefs and leave out Travis Kelce. He said (yelled) in the post game:

I think Kelce might have been thinking about the song by Elvis Presley called: “Viva Las Vegas” which repeats it three times as well.

It must disturb the Las Vegas Raiders to no end to see that the Chiefs win the Super Bowl on their own home turf. Patrick Mahomes was a perfect 11-and-0 in domes like the one they played in at Allegiant Stadium before the game and now… he is 12-and-0 and still perfect. Who knows if the curse of the Chiefs Kingdom flag being buried underneath that stadium by a worker played a role, but it certainly doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings in Kansas City.

The final score was ChIefs 25, 49ers 22, and that came about as the teams played in Overtime. The first period of overtime was coming to a close when the Chiefs ran a tried and true play called the “Corn Dog” (or “Tom and Jerry”) which K.C. used twice a year ago to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. This victory gives the Chiefs back-to-back Super Bowls wins for the first time in the NFL in nearly 20 seasons. The New England Patriots did it in 2004 and then again in 2005. The Chiefs now join the Patriots, 49ers, Packers, Cowboys, Dolphins, Broncos and the Steelers as two times — in a row — winners. The Steelers did that on two separate occasions.

Head Coach Andy Reid now has not only the most wins for two different organizations — the Eagles and the Chiefs — but he joins the short list of coaches who have won at least 3 Super Bowls, which includes Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs. We Chiefs fans are witnessing historical greatness and should be grateful for the opportunity. Reid now leads the Chiefs into rarified territory because if he wins a third Super Bowl in a row next season, it will be a feat that no other coach has ever accomplished in the NFL. Not in the Super Bowl era.

Something needs to be said about Taylor Swift and her presence at this game. The cameras didn’t pan to her suite as often as I thought they would, but seeing her on the field and kissing Travis Kelce and loving on him was extra special.

We’ve seen other players like Patrick Mahomes being engulfed by Brittany Matthews (Mahomes), but this is special because of who she is. Taylor Swift has re-written the rules of the musical industry and by re-recording all of her albums, she has taken back the power that was taken from her once by a man named Scooter Braun who bought out her collection unbeknownst to her.

Back to the game.

When Mecole Hardman found himself alone and nearly in the end zone upon catching the game winning pass, he said he nearly didn’t catch the ball and blacked out. Here’s a look at the game winning catch (0:10):

What’s odd about this game is that two of the least popular wide receivers caught touchdown passes. Not only did Mecole Hardman catch one, his only TD catch of the year, but so did Marquez Valdes-Scantling, only his second TD catch of the year. Here’s his catch (0:07):

I have never gotten so many texts from friends during a game and that was simply because the game was a see-saw battle and while it was boring for the first three quarters, it became a fourth quarter — and OT — battle that was one for the ages. Above you can see the Chiefs went up on the 49ers with 2:31 left in the 3rd quarter. That’s when it all began really.

The 49ers drove the length of the field only to set up a blocked extra point attempt. With the Chiefs leading 13-to-10, the 49ers scored on this play (0:09):

… only to have the extra point blocked by the Chiefs like this (0:09):

With the 49ers only going up by three points it opened the door for the Chiefs to score a field goal which could tie the game and send it into overtime. Which, is exactly what Harrison Butker did. Butker also kicked a short field goal before the half to cut the score to 10-to-3 and then kicked a 57 yard field goal which was a Super Bowl record. Here’s his record kick (0:13):

Mahomes finished the game by passing for 34 of 46 attempts, for 333 yards 2 TDs, one (1) INT and a passer rating of 99.3. His rival, Brock Purdy was 23 of 38 for 255 yards with one TD and an 89.3 rating.

You just have to see Andy Reid and Chris Jones in the aftermath (0:23):

Here’s Mitch Holthus call on the game winning play (0:52):

Chills, moment of victory (0:10):
