Chiefs: Evaluating Available WR Choices at #32

Laddie Morse

To begin with, I’m not at all saying the Kansas City Chiefs will be selecting a WR first overall. Although, the Chiefs will be picking at #32 this coming Thursdays evening in the 2024 NFL Draft. That may end up being exactly the case, especially if no other team is willing to trade with them. Up or down. My best guess is the Chiefs will be trading… up or down… who knows for sure, but in the event they stay at #32, it’s a good idea to evaluate the players — specifically the WRs — who will be there and be possible choices.

James Koh and Matt Harmon have a podcast show called, “Reception Perception” and they recently did a piece on Xavier Legette. Here’s a couple of snippets from their podcast (0:49):

My comp for Xavier Legette is –> DK Metcalf. Veach said recently that he regretted not taking WR DK Metcalf in the 2019 NFL draft which likely means that he’d take Metcalf over Mecole Hardman… if he had to do it over again. What that means this time around is… Xavier Legette is in play. That’s perhaps why I find it very, very interesting that Legette had a visit with the Chiefs recently (see below).

The “Reception Perception” went on to say this about Legette (0:40):

A “weapon” is exactly what K.C. needs and Legette has all the tools to make that happen. Xavier Legette is a 4.39 wideout and would be a great choice for the Chiefs… if he’s still on the board come Thursday evening when it’s time for the Chiefs to pick. His ability to grow and develop is crucial and as I’ve said before, the Chiefs don’t necessarily need a #1 wideout right now. They need several players who can hold onto the ball and create separation for Patrick Mahomes.

If Legette is good against zone coverage, it makes the work of Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown , not to mention Isiah Pacheco, that much easier.

Adonai Mitchell runs a fast 40 yard dash and at 6-foot-2, and 205 lbs. that’s really cooking. Steve Smith says Adonai catches the ball in tight to his body 90% of the time… and btw… that’s not a good thing. However, Mitchell has 4.34 speed and can provide the deep threat that K.C. is looking for to help stretch the field and force opposing Safeties to stay back and give the box more room… which of course, is good for the Chiefs running game. Here’s more from Filmstart including some weaknesses (0:34):

Ladd McConkey is out of Georgia and stands, 5-foot-11 and weighs 186 lbs.. Here’s The Underdog NFL Draft hosted by Josh Norris and Hayden Winks and they are explaining some of Ladd McConkey‘s upside (0:35):

Matt Hicks and John Lobb break down Xavier Worthy and his play as they have been watching him much longer than I have. Here’s John Lobb (0:44):

Here’s more from Matt Hicks this time onXavier Worthy (0:54):

Worthy is more of an option than I previously believed he was. He sounds like a Tyreek Hill type of player but Hill was more sturdy. Then again, perhaps Worthy is more sturdy than I thought he was.

Everybody and their grandmother’s grandmother has a podcast these days so I thought I’d give a few podcasters a chance to show their skills. I know I’ve changed my mind a dozen times on this, but I’m now hoping the Chief take Ladd McConkey or Xavier Legette with the 32nd pick. Although, I think they’ll take an OT if he’s available.

What do you think now that we’ve opend up the door to a number of WR options?
