Chiefs Fail Miserably in Denver, 9-to-24

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs had 5 turnovers and scored zero touchdowns in a totally unentertaining and pathetic performance in Denver. The Denver Broncos ran for over 150 yards while K.C. ran for just 62. That includes both Jerick McKinnon and Kadarius Toney running for negative yardage. Patrick Mahomes may have thrown passes to 10 different receivers but he finished with a QB rating of 59.2, was sacked three times and under pressure all game long. He also threw two interceptions and had zero TD passes.

While the defense has been playing lights out this year, the 24 points allowed to the Broncos was the highest number of points they’ve allowed this year. Patrick Mahomes was awful in this game and no amount of magic was going to save him. Same goes for Travis Kelce (6 catches and 3 drops for 58 yards). The team from Denver had lost to Kansas City 16 straight times and now the Broncos can start their own winning streak… God forbid. They played harder and smarter than the Chiefs did and deserved this win… which is hard to say, since I despise their team.

The Chiefs scored their 9 points in the first half and were held scoreless in the second half. The one positive for K.C. is that their Kicker Harrison Butker hasn’t missed a kick all season and made three on this day. Yes, he had one of his FGs bump into the right goal post in this game… however, it went through.

Player of the Game

Harrison Butker has to be the Player of the Game in this case. Even though the Chiefs lost this one the only player who made a difference was Butker. The Chiefs lost the toss and Denver deferred so they could get the ball first in the second half. When K.C. took the ball first in the game, they did nothing with it, but on their second possession they drove for 13 plays into the red zone and failed to score a TD, so they had Butker kick a 23 yard FG. The only other player to get some points in the Player of the Game race was Safety Justin Reid who blocked the second Field Goal of his career.

Drive By Drive Narrative

• On the Chiefs third possession, on the third play, Mahomes threw a pass to WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling who then fumbled the ball away and three plays later the Broncos scored a TD.

• On the fourth play of the fourth drive, Mahomes threw an INT.

• On the fifth play of the fifth drive, Harrison Butker kicked a 34 yard Field Goal.

• On the 8th play of the Chiefs sixth drive Patrick Mahomes was sacked and fumbled the ball away.

• 6 plays later, the Broncos Russell WIlson was sacked and he fumbled the ball away and…

• 2 plays later, Harrison Butker kicked his third Field Goal to make the score 9-to-14 at Halftime.

• After the Half, the Broncos drove for 13 plays but had their field Goal blocked by Chiefs Safety Justin Reid.

• The remainder of the Chiefs possessions went like this:

• Punt

• Turnover on downs

• Interception

• End of Game

.

In the meantime, the Broncos scored a Touchdown and a Field Goal to win: 24-to-9.

Tweet of the Game

When it could have made a difference and put the Chiefs down by less than a TD, Skyy Moore dropped a pass in the end zone, which would have been a TD. It looks like this (0:09):

.

This was offered in a Tweet by VP of pizza consumption:

.

“I see people saying Pat should take first down. I can appreciate that, but guys… that’s a TD to 95% of WRs in NFL. Moore just has to catch it. He was open. The pass was perfect. Catch it”

.

Also from Twitter, Lisa Foxx added:

.

“Why would you trust Skyy Moore in that instance?”

.

Good question!

Quote of the Game

I agree with this sentiment completely:

.

“If this embarrassing loss to the Broncos inspires

Veach to do something before the deadline to

fix this broken KC WR room it will be worth it

long term.” -Adam Best

.

This game could end up being a positive in the Chiefs season if it means they make a move to pick up a substantial wideout before Tuesday’s deadline… someone who can get open at will, and who has good hands. Now, I’m aware that the Chiefs have limited resources and they may have to cut someone to make it happen. However, so be it. Make the move. Make it now.
