Chiefs: Give me that dang Control, I’m switching stations, Dagnabbit!

My choice is Yosemite Sam, “Dagnabbit” personified. Here’s a link to a short action image.

I’m reading… reviewing… consulting… and it’s just plain time to switch the dang channels from drama #1, Dagnabbit!

.

Drama #1 –> Frank Clark’s Saga

Is this the Chiefs only drama right now?

I spent a bit of time with the Frank Clark Saga, but tried to focus attention on an action the Chiefs could take, namely an action by our GM, Brett Veach, but at that point, I have had enough. So –> Switch Channels. Nothing to see here… yet.

.

At this point, we only know that there were two gun charges. We don’t know if the firearm was this or that, we do know Frank Clark has hired a top criminal defense attorney. The Chiefs and the NFL have made no response other than to state they’re aware of the situation. Nothing more will arise from this until some court action is taken. LAPD doesn’t file charges, they arrest suspects and it is up the LA District Attorney from that point on. We don’t know the story about either arrest, except what has been printed. It’s not the end of the story, but why bother with a bunch of drama at this juncture. You don’t know the facts, and getting all up in arms is not constructive.

.

Right now, other than speculate on the possibility of not having Clark for opening day, and perhaps signing a Free Agent or making a trade in the “worst case scenario,” is how this should be handled, or at least, that is how I am going to view this. I suggested in my piece on Sunday that the roster has puzzle pieces in place. I also returned to the suggestion that the Chiefs bring on Melvin Ingram. If that worst case scenario does rear it’s ugly head, then Brett Veach would have that possibility resolved in the, report to camp time frame… hopefully.

.

There is nothing more to be said at the present time, other than suggesting signing a F/A or making a trade. I’m not going to mention the Frank Clark Saga again, until I have facts to report. We could consult the firing squad outfits around the south end of town, or consult our followers by taking a poll. No, Let’s not do that. It would just play up the Drama Queen baloney.

Drama #2 –> Who Will Start at RG?

Actually just a Mini-Drama, call it M-D #1

It’s really a Chiefs On Field Football Drama, first involving several players, then – all of the sudden like – we’ll have the answer. It’s like this every year, and will be that way in 2021’s Training Camp! ArrowheadOne, has presented several views of the Offensive Guard role for the Right Side. To be sure, fans have their favorites, and during OTA’s and Mini-Camp, there has been considerable speculation. Most of us have commented one way, or another, or even a third and four way. One thing we all can likely agree upon is that Kyle Long is highly unlikely to be slotted for the starting job. He is injured and he won’t make the camp open date and as we have understood it, he could make it back and be ready to play opening day. Still, Kyle is not going to be present for the 5 days of run-throughs before they begin actually donning the pads when they’ll get after it.

.

We know how Andy Reid is, in favoring veterans first off and then getting players swapped in and out until they arrive at the starting offensive line of choice. That is the default and likely the way things will unfold. I do have my own caveat(s) here because I do feel it’s possible that a rookie can start at RG. Even more unusual would be a similar situation at Center, or RT.

.

Usually this occurs early in camp and I have no doubt that by the time the players are getting after it, Reid, Heck, and other coaches will have formulated who it is going to be, then we’ll see who’s getting reps with the “ones” and who is going to be designated to the two’s and three’s. Even with Long’s injury, the Chiefs Offensive Line is going to be comprised of a very talented group of players.

.

I think the big Grin Icon for the “Andy’s” is in order here. By the second week we will see things solidify. At first this or that player will be inserted with the “ones”, then another, until suddenly, the pundits will see it unfolding, authors will write it all up and Patrick Mahomes will join the two “Andy’s” with a big grin. That’s drama that we can all enjoy, is it not.

.

So here, I have my OL Crush, actually. Long is out of the running. Andrew Wylie was offered a shot a winning the position. Nick Allegretti started several games at LG. They could move Yasir Durant inside and Darryl Williams is also a consideration. In truth? I really like Durant out of Mizzou too, and Nick Allegretti is a fan favorite coming out of nowhere as a late round pick who has done all that you could ask of a late round draft pick. LDT returns after his year opt-out to be a Doctor. So, there you have it… except for Trey Smith. I really like this man, I love his personality and his effort in the community… the same way that I admire LDT. If Trey doesn’t start, I am good with that. It’s a logical end result. I am still going to root for sending Mr. Smith to Washington — er, Arrowhead Stadium, as the starter.

.

Drama #3 –> Who Will Start at RT?

Actually, it’s just another Mini-Drama, call it M-D #2

As we get ready for the Chiefs players to enter camp about 30 days from now, it appears that two main feature considerations are in order. Think of it as cinema: Veteran Mike Remmers, who is a darned good OT, on the right side, will be competing with someone who is essentially a rookie, Lucas Niang. Listening to far wiser heads than me, I take into account how Andy Reid and by default, Andy Heck, look at new players breaking into the NFL game, and game speed. Fortunately, we all have witnessed Niang’s workouts. I think he is going to give Mr. Mike a tussle, but it will likely be a role turned over to the veteran in this case. I will add that from my study this spring: I like Niang quite a bunch, so call this a mini-feature drama!

.

Mini-Drama #4 – Who Will be the OC?

What about the middle? Call it M-D #3

Here again, we are very easily going to see a veteran (Blythe), pitted against a rookie (Humphrey). Before the draft, Laddie or I kept eliminating Creed Humphrey because he was a south-paw. Well heck, I’m one too, but I felt that this was something that would throw a monkey wrench into the works so for that reason alone, I discounted him. Leave it to Beaver — er, Veach, to do exactly what he should have done: Veach selected the best Pro-ready Center in the draft! Plus, he got him with his second pick in round two.

.

Shut my mouth, cap the pen, close the book, ring the bell, snuff the candle!

.

The Wizardry of our GM came shining through.

.

Even before that, Veach went out and signed a good center in Free Agency, in the person of Austin Blythe. In fact, my judgement was at the time, he was a better player than our old Austin. Plus, he’s versatile and can play Guard too. We can consider other contenders: Nick Allegretti or Darryl Ward. That’s 4 guys who could — should? — be competing for the Center role, either group One, Two or Three. I am in the Catbird Seat in regard to Mini-Drama #3. Whatever happens, happens with reason and purpose. I am good with it. BTW… this is one of the two positions mentioned earlier, where a rookie could well earn the starting job.

.

No matter what, we can swap channels back and forth and the pick mini-drama we wish to watch. We can even swap back and forth. It’s all good stuff. I prefer we let Drama #1 drift into obscurity and get on with Chiefs Football!
