Chiefs Host Packers, Week 8: OPEN THREAD

Chiefs Host Packers, Week 8: OPEN THREAD – Sunday Night Football features the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Green Bay Packers in Arrowhead Stadium and what would have been the matchup of the two best quarterbacks in the NFL right now, will only give us a glimpse of Aaron Rodgers while Patrick Mahomes rests his right patella.

Flipping the Field (Script)

To beat the Green Bay Packers without the best QB in the biz at their disposal, Andy Reid will need to flip the script on these Packers and do to them what other teams have been doing to the Chiefs: run the ball, control the clock, and keep the ball out the hands of their excellent QB.

It’s nice when I find others who were thinking the same thing I was. However, running the ball, controlling the clock, and playing keep away from Aaron Rodgers may be easier said than done. You may recall my mentioning that the Chiefs to 11 rushing attempts, while they threw 35 times a couple of weeks ago, as I was suggesting the offense would need to make a more concerted effort in coming close to balancing the run and the pass if they wanted to beat the Broncos. Then, the offense did just that, by attempting 27 running plays to 30 passing plays in a 30-to-6 win over Denver.

Balancing the run and the pass will be even more important this week and the Chiefs may need to call more running plays than passing plays to come out on the other side with a win. This is not only true on offense, but the defense must stop the Packers ground game cold in its tracks if they want to set up situations where they can pin back their ears and go after Rodgers. Now, that may not be as out of the question as you imagine:

Granted, neither team is doing very well stopping the run, but the Packers may be designing a game plan to come out running the ball as much as the Chiefs will, and if they win that contest, it could be over early for the Chiefs as Aaron Rodgers will have all day in the pocket to do as he pleases, if they can insure a running attack.

Mahomes and Guardian

I guess that no matter how much a player lobbies to play in a game, when the coach steps in to make the decision, it’s a done deal. On Friday, Andy Reid said of Patrick Mahomes: “He just isn’t ready.” So, we will see Patrick Mahomes in street clothes on the sidelines tonight. Dang it, there goes the consecutive games record set by Brett Favre at 297.

Five for the Trade Deadline

Last week there was a piece called, “Kansas City Chiefs Bargain Shoppers Guide NFL Trade Deadline” written by Thomas Welte at ArrowheadAddict in which he suggested five players the Chief amy want to take a look at. Here’s my breakdown of his suggestions:

Thomas said that Josh Jackson might be available if the Chiefs dangle Sammy Watkins and a 3rd round pick. He goes on to say, RB may not be the Chiefs biggest need but that Penny was a first round pick and that he’s fallen out of favor because other Seattle RBs have done better than him. However, that doesn’t mean Penny isn’t a top notch RB. With the trade deadline coming up in two days, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the possibilities.

Don’t Stop Believing

When I come across a tweet that touches me I have to share it with you…

Not only might Andy Reid guide Matt Moore to an epic win today, but whoever replaces Frank Clark might also ball out. It’s interesting when a tweet gives you perspective, but this one is right, let’s not denigrate Frank Clark and in the next breath say the Chiefs can’t win without him.
