Chiefs: K.C. Has Gone Hollywood

Laddie Morse

Some people have begun to call the Chiefs, “America’s Team,” but I think they have been going down the Hollywood path for some time now. Who knows when it all started for sure? However, we do know it has happened and some say it isn’t pretty, but I will say it is. Extremely pretty. Even Hollywood pretty.

The likely reason it’s so hard to pin down the exact timing of the Chiefs going Hollywood is becasue we don’t know — exactly — when Patrick Mahomes became a household name. Was it before or after the 2019 season when Mahomes not only won the MVP award for the season, but he also helped win Super Bowl LIV and the SB MVP award there. See, it’s impossible to know… but one thing is for sure… we know it has happened. How do we know? Commercials.

First, Mahomes had to become the heir apparent to the GOAT’s throne (thrown?) and that appeared to have come easy for him. Was it a commercial of him throwing a pass to a grounds crew member in a cart at Arrowhead? Or was it a Hunt’s Ketchup Commercials? (1:54)

Putting Ketchup on a steak will get everyone’s attention for sure. So, maybe it’s Mahomes fault (responsibility?) that K.C. has gone Hollywood. Even if it is a consequence of Mahomes choosing to come to Kansas City, it’s a beautiful thing, IMHO.

Of course, his brother on the field, Travis Kelce, has made his fair share of commercials, but when Patrick Mahomes lassoed Andy Reid into the commercial making business, everything really took off… as far as K.C. going Hollywood is concerned. Here’s just part of that commercial. (0:05)

Mind you, it’s the writing that made this commercial stand out, but Reid truly delivers! Sure, Mahomes had a hand in bringing Reid to the table… hehehe… and although Reid is known for loving Hamburgers, it’s the “nuggies” that make the difference.

There is a strong possibility that the change over from Kansas City, MO… to… Hollywood Mid-West, was Travis Kelce’s fault. After all, he starred in his own show called, “Catching Kelce.” (2:31)

“Catching Kelce” was on the air, on the E Channel, in 2016 and he dated a lady named Kayla Nicole since that time until 2022, but I must say, when Kelce does his dead-pan to the camera (in the video above) at the 1:00 minute mark, it’s a special second in time, a true “Hollywood” moment. Pure Gold in fact. Although that TV show didn’t produce a “Mrs.” Kelce, it may have played a role in his snagging the most famous pop star in the world: Taylor Swift.

Could the transition from K.C. to Hollywood have happened this past year when Travis Kelce began seeing Taylor Swift? In an article written by Meredith Nardino for USMagazine.com she quotes Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker as saying:

The name of this article is: “Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Hopes Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift ‘Get Married’ and Have Kids” and Meredith Nardino goes on to share:

Wow… “Jet lag is a choice.” Hmm. That shows me that Taylor is all in when it comes to Travis. If kids are in the plans, it won’t surprise me one bit. Travis has taken his role as an uncle to his brother Jason’s children seriously. So, we know he loves kids… and family… and the rest should come naturally.

The name says it all. While Marquise Brown has taken on the moniker of “Hollywood” (he was born in Hollywood, Florida) it’s his name that has drawn my attention, for this piece anyway. Brown was taken with the 25th pick overall of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. In his introductory presser, Hollywood Brown talks about winning, mostly (1:14):

I believe Hollywood Brown will have a huge impact on the team and their success in the 2024 season. HIs ability to stretch the field and to make cuts on underneath patterns will help the other pass catchers including Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and anyone the Chiefs sign in the near future.

Hollywood is a great fit for this offense. He should make this 2024 campaign worth remembering. Plus, he should make the Hollywood of the Mid-West an even bigger deal, just by his very presence.
