Chiefs Shock Ravens 17-to-10, Return to Super Bowl

Well, the result turned out to be what most in Kansas City expected. Was Patrick Mahomes in Lamar Jackson’s head? Sure, why not. The final score indicated that this was the case. The Lamar Hunt Trophy is back where it belongs, in Kansas City.

TE Travis Kelce also let out his novel scream: “You’ve got to fight, for your right, to Party!” (0:33):

Travis Kelce is going to another Super Bowl. That sounds right to me. Even though the announcers of this game (including Tony Romo, but I’m not mentioning any names here), said right after words, “The Ravens will be in this game next year” and it is not surprising because their broadcast of the game totally gave preference to the Ravens. Sickeningly so. However, this moment is not about Baltimore… it’s about the incredible Chiefs victory!

Here’s a look at the Chiefs first TD which came at the end of their opening drive of the game (0:36):

After the Chiefs drove for a 75-yard TD drive, the Ravens did the same tying the game at 7-to-7. However, the Chiefs scored again on their very next drive, a 16 play affair in which Isiah Pacheco ran the ball in from the 2-yard line. Here’s a look (0:10):

So, the Lamar Hunt Trophy is back in Kansas City… again. With the passing away of Norma Hunt this past year, many were hoping this might be the case, and this team made it happen.

Our Chief Writer, David Bell, said this about the game:

A close friend of mine sent this question in:

To which I replied:

That says a lot about the Chiefs football team this year. The defense is stellar while the Offense is doing just enough to keep other teams honest. The Chiefs shut down the Ravens vaunted Rushing Attack by only allowing 81 rushing yards with Lamar Jackson getting the lion’s share of those yard with 54. The Ravens have averaged 229 yards rushing per game this year, but not today!

The real story of this game was the turn over battle. The Ravens had 3 turnovers while K.C. had none. Anytime you can win the takeaway game, you can usually win the game. The Chiefs have been closer to the bottom of the league, while the Ravens have been right at the top, this year in that department so… this is a bit of a shock. At the very least, surprising.

The Chiefs also won the Time of Possession contest and held the ball offensively, for 37:30 while the Ravens held the ball for 22:30. Anytime you can win the ToP of a game by that kind of margin, you likely will win the contest, which is exactly what the Chiefs did.

I kept looking for signs that Patrick Mahomes was in Lamar Jackson’s head. While I continue to think that is true, Jackson has once again come up short in a critical contest. While Mahomes may deserve a Player of the Game award, Travis Kelce had the best game of all. Travis Kelce had 11 catches for 116 yards receiving with a TD catch without missing one of the targets Mahomes threw his way. That perfect day for him is the main reason he get the Player of the Game Award.
