Chiefs: Will Gumby Mahomes Play on Sunday?

Chiefs: Will Gumby Mahomes Play on Sunday? – by now, if you’re a Kansas City Chiefs fan, you know that Patrick Mahomes had his kneecap thrown out of joint in the game last Thursday against the Denver Broncos, in Denver.

If you’re at all unfamiliar with the way a kneecap is supposed to look, it’s not supposed to look like the picture above, with the kneecap sitting on the exterior (lateral) part of the knee. Personally having had my knee out of joint, I can tell you that it is the worst pain I have suffered in my life and that includes the time I had a heart attack.

That’s why you could see Patrick Mahomes covering his face as he was laying on the field prior to the time Rick Burkholder popped it back into place while Mahoems was still prone on the turf.

So, what is more than surprising is that a few minutes later, Patrick Mahomes could be seen walking off the field on his own volition.

Notice how his face shows no signs of pain. Prior to the time I had a left knee replacement 6 years ago, my knee was what is called a “trick knee” and it would pop out as I was walking down the hallway and be extremely painful then it would pop back in 30 minutes later on it’s own and the pain would completely go away. So, I’m familiar with how the pain in a knee works.

Also, because of my background in sports and attending college to get a coaching degree (which I changed three years into that process), I know there are athletes who can play through a tremendous amount of pain, while others need to come out of a game with a hangnail.

With ten days between the game in which he was hurt in Denver and the game this Sunday evening vs the Green Bay Packers, Patrick Mahomes could be seen practicing with the team while Andy Reid is suggesting he, “Won’t rule him out.” It’s been speculated that those words are just coach speak or thrown out there to force the Packers to prepare for the ghost possibility of Mahomes playing.

Could Mahomes Play on Sunday Evening?

Firstly, there’s the argument that, “NFL players don’t want to miss out on one of only 16 games” in a season. Cris Carter makes that point here:

So, Cris Carter is saying he’d be shocked if Patrick Mahomes is not playing this Sunday. However… however (I can hear the naysayers echoing the word “however’ down the hallways)… the pragmatic approach to the question of whether or not Patrick Mahomes will play is simple… he needs time to recover:

Number four on this list is intriguing because most everyone is projecting the pragmatic approach. So, what if Patrick Mahomes is like one of those tough athletes (like a Cris Carter) who I came to know in college who wouldn’t leave the field unless they were on a stretcher? Plus, what will those in charge go on to make that decision? Is it seeing Mahomes practice without pain?

To be specific, this picture shows Patrick Mahomes stretching/flexing his right knee in pre-practice drills with his teammates. Listen to 610 radio give a 1:59 break down his possible return to action:

Bob Fescoe makes a good point here that the team of doctors, including doctors nationwide, are looking over Patrick Mahomes medical records and practice performances and are all amazed with how he is progressing. From Matt Derrick who is the beat writer for Chiefs Digest:

The Chiefs won’t close the door on QB Patrick Mahomes playing vs. the Packers yet, but they’re moving full steam ahead with Matt Moore as their No. 1 quarterback for now.

It’s reasonable to assume Andy Reid will be preparing backup QB Matt Moore as the starter because if Moore is the man, he needs to be believed in. However, if Patrick Mahomes can play, don’t count out that possibility.

9th Inning Closer?

Even if Matt Moore is the starter and plays 90% of the game, if the game is close and the Chiefs need a TD with 2 minutes left in the game, don’t count out the possibility that Mahomes could play the role of the ace closer. If all Mahomes has to do is stand in the pocket and heave long bombs… he’s your man. I also would not count him out as the starter with Matt Moore playing the tag-team role throughout the game as Andy Reid feels comfortable with his star QB taking a break. If Patrick Mahomes plays at all, it will be because he’s one flexible cat.
