Chiefs: Xavier Worthy is Worthy!

David Bell

I believe wide receiver Xavier Worthy is a better than just good addition to the Chiefs WR Corp. Early on, I wrote about him before the draft in a piece called: “Not a Mock: But 20 to 40 or So is My Key” in which I wrote:

In the same article, I stated that I would be hard-pressed to draft an OT in round one. That turned out to be the case. Still, with the Chiefs second picks, they snagged a LOT in Round 2: No. 63, from San Francisco, Kingsley Suamataia, out of BYU.

While I regret the loss of a 3rd-round pick to the selection trade-up of Worthy, it was probably a Veach defensive move to protect against another NFL Club from bringing him aboard.

With their first pick, the Chiefs traded up to pick 28 to make their selection. With their first-round pick, trading up, GM Brett Veach drafted University of Texas WR Xavier “Zay” Worthy, who set a combine record 40-time. As they say, Speed Kills! and Worthy has that in spades.

So, the Chiefs covered their two biggest needs in the draft with their first two picks. Pre-Draft, I thought that the Chiefs would select another UT WR –> Adonai Mitchell, which is how I predicted it, and then I had LOT, Patrick Paul from the University of Houston as the second pick because, just like the Chiefs actually did with Kingsley Suamataia.

Take a deeper look at Xavier Worthy by checking this video from “Thinking Football” (11:27):

Prior to viewing that particular video, even before it was put together, I looked hard at the highlight film for Worthy (5:16):

Another — spoken — view that convinced me, was provided by Daniel Harms of RGR Football. See that presentation:

I am not stating that I did not worry about Worthy’s weight and size… I did… which caused me to think that Adonai Mitchell would be the Chiefs pick. However, reviewing the tape again tells me:

That said, I think Worthy is a very worthy round-one draft pick. Take a look for yourselves and decide. Right now, I worry that WR, Rashee Rice will miss a good portion of the season due to his legal problems, so having Worthy building into an NFL WR, and with Hollywood Brown taking up snaps and getting targets, Andy Reid will have two WRs who are deep threats… which… is a good thing. Also, I hope the Rashee Rice situation can be resolved quickly.
