Halftime Rearview Review: How Super Are the Chiefs? – Part 4 – Life and death can be inches apart: ask anyone who has seen battle or been in an accident. Football is a game of inches, ask any long-time Chiefs fan. Chiefs fans have known this all too well for decades, dating back to the double OT AFC Championship game against Miami in January of 1972.
2018 was no different. A pass 4 inches shorter or an RB 4 inches faster and we score a TD against NE in the first half. 4 less inches and we are not offsides or a ref can’t find his flag. In both instances, we are headed to the Super Bowl! Other historic occurrences (always in playoff games) are too horrifying to recount.
The 2018 Chiefs offense was inches better than the rest of the league, and in some cases yards, yards better than the rest of the league. We know points are going on the board (other than the horrid Colts game on Sunday night). But even then, passes were inches from being completed, and first downs by the Colts by inches.
The 2018 Chiefs offense is SUPER and so is the 2019 offense… but the issue remains about the defense. How bad is the defense? Some say atrocious or vomitous, while others say, if we can just be average, we make the Super Bowl. Well let’s quantify this once and for all.
How much better does the defense have to be, to be a Super defense (in inches, please)?
Run Defense
Measurements: 18 inches less yards per carry or 2 first downs and the D is Super! (see green highlights)
Pass Defense #1
Measurements: 18 inches less yards per attempt or 2 first downs and the D is Super! (see green highlights)
Pass Defense #2
Measurements: 1 sack less per game, half a pass defensed more per game and the D is Super! (see green highlights)
Total Defense
Measurements: 10% better overall on 3rd down, 1 possession, and 1 TD less and the D is Super! (see green highlights)
Scoring
Measurements: 1 less touchdown by the defense or one more extra point by the offense and the D is Super! (see green highlights)
Scoring & TOP
Measurements: 120 seconds more of possession time or 1 more first down by either the offense or the defense and both the Offense and Defense are Super!
Summary of Summaries
There you have it. 18 inches here, 18 inches there, 1 first down here, 2 first downs there, 1 less score.
“We could all be 4 inches better.” – Andy Reid
Never a more true statement could be made.
