I explored a number of topics to write about this weekend. I considered pointing out that Alex Smith‘s QBR is higher the less attempts he has in a year, but since it doesn’t lead to a direct correlation in points per game, I didn’t see the reason to explore it. I considered drawing up plays that Reid should add to the offense that would work better with Mahomes under center. Then I set out to predict the starting lineup for 2019 and I realized something, besides the fact that Demarcus Robinson will be the #2 WR by then. I realized that all those pieces would be silly to write, because at this point in the off-season, we know basically nothing.
We’ve spent a good deal of time breaking down Chiefs draft picks. Draft picks who have yet to play in pads, let alone a game in the NFL. We decry the fact that certain players are developmental and declare others day one starters. Yet really, it’s far too early to tell. Travis Kelcie should have been an instant starter, but never got to play his rookie year. Chris Jones was supposed to be a project, and instead, proved to be one of the best DEs in the NFL. Morse was supposed to be a bad pick, an awful reach and proved to be one of the best OL that Chiefs had. Grading drafts or draft picks, at this point, is meaningless.
We speculate and project what one player or another player may do. We extoll Tyreek Hill and write off Tyler Bray. The truth is that Hill could easily go through a sophomore slump, Bray could shock us all and push Smith for the starting job. That’s not likely, but there are plenty of likely scenarios that never pan out. Remember, for all our debate about which CB would start opposite Marcus Peters, last year, the guy who eventually did wasn’t even on the roster in training camp.
The unfortunate truth is this: we are stuck in the worst part of the off-season. News is hard to come by, and doesn’t mean all that much when you do hear it. If I had to guess, I’d say that Chiefs defense is much better than last year, that Hunt provides a spark on offense, that if Reid dials up less QB and more RB the Chiefs flourish and that next year all our dreams come true and Chiefs possess a true franchise QB, but that’s just a guess and there are way too many things that could happen between now and then to drastically change that outlook. While all of us writers are beating our heads against the wall trying to find something, ANYTHING to write about, we appreciate all the readers who inspire us to keep going. Thank you for sticking with us when there’s really not much to write about. Oh and just for fun, here’s a three round mock draft for next year:
