Patrick Mahomes III: To Be, Or Not To Be, the GOAT

Laddie Morse

Patrick Mahomes is a wonder. We all have known this from his first time on the field at the end of the 2017 season when he came on to start against the Broncos. Since then, he has in no way disappointed. Sure, he’s had a few ups and downs, but there isn’t a QB in the league who wouldn’t take his downs… and substitute them for their own ups. Then, those QBs would likely be called the GOAT, but they’re not, and Mahomes is. So, let’s take a look at a few of the ups that make Patrick Mahomes the GOAT.

Along with Tight End Travis Kelce, he and Patrick Mahomes have set a record for the most connections between a pair of players by scoring 16 touchdowns. Even the old GOAT Tom Brady recognized their greatness and record:

That’s pretty cool of Tom Brady. I never have been a big supperter of his, but that kind of magnanimous gesture may change my mind. For the past 13 AFC Conference Championship game, it’s been either Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes lined up at QB as the starter. Brady did the feat from 2011-to-2018 and that, of course, had Mahomes taking the last six straight now. Those two streaks are the longest in NFL History.

A record that Patrick Mahomes now owns all by himself is the total number of wins before the age of 30, in the postseason. BTW, Mahomes is only 28 years old.

More records to know come from CBSSports.com. Writer Douglas Clawson has an article called, “2024 NFL conference championship game facts to know: MVP showdown, Mahomes’ flawless streak, Lions on road” in which he says.

The combination of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes appears to be an unbeatable pairing, at least in the playoffs. I know, I know, the Chiefs lost Super Bowl LV to the Bucs, but their OL was in disrepair back then. Plus, since then, Reid and GM Brett Veach appear to have learned their lessons about the OL, and have invested in their linemen extensively.

Mahomes has a great attitude and he’s communicated that and made it clear in media sessions:

.

“To go out there and win”… that’s been evident as he continues to prepare for each victory and then succeeds at doing just that… winning. You wonder sometimes how a grown man can consistently win over other grown men who are preparing just like they are? Mahomes is special and that specialness show up in every game he plays. We haven’t seen those “magical” plays as much this season, but his ability to win is a part of that magic and credit must be given where credit is due.

Although I gave the Player of the Game Award against the Bills to RB Isiah Pacheco, KCSN gave it to… Patrick Mahomes

We all are caught up on giving Mahomes the GOAT moniker when Nick Wright is busy handing Mahomes the Babe Ruth label:

As Rich Eisen has said, the last time the Buffalo Bills have beaten the Chiefs was in 1993 when Joe Montana was the QB. BTW, Rich Eisen picked the Bills to win over the Chiefs on Sunday. Big mistake. Eisen goes on to say the Chiefs were wondering if they could flip the switch and turn it on. Apparently they can… and they did.

It is also apparent that Patrick Mahomes has become so good, that he is now the villain for many fan bases across America:

That’s also a fire that Mahomes doesn’t mind stoking with both his deeds — waving goodbye to the crowd — and his words:

The Bills OL Dion Dawkins said this in the past week which give us some reference for what Patrick Mahomes has said here:

Someone needs to learn not to poke the bear… uh, I mean the GOAT!

Oh… and one more thing:
