With the 2021 NFL trade deadline coming up at 4 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, one day after the Kansas City Chiefs Monday Night Football game vs the New York Giants, a lot of league pundits have K.C. involved in a number of possible trades. Over the Cap has the Chiefs salary cap sitting at $2.99M so, let’s take a look at some of those trade possibilities, with that in mind.

DE Melvin Ingram

Perhaps the biggest “rumor” has been the possible trade for defensive end Melvin Ingram. Ryan Tracy att RGR Football breaks down the possibilities of Ingram coming to K.C. in his 6:42 video chat:

Firstly, Ingram is said to be unhappy in Pittsburgh. K.C. tried to sing him this past offseason but couldn’t agree on terms. Ingram has only started one game for he Steelers this year but played in 6 games. He’s 32 years old, has 10 total tackles and one sack on 62% of their defensive snaps.

While those numbers aren’t standout numbers, he would certainly help the Chiefs defensive front so I’d give a 6th round pick for him at best. Ingram has a $4M one-year contract but since he’s already played 6 game (his 7th this weekend), the CHiefs would only owe him somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.5M or even less. There are those who think that since the Chiefs could have gotten Ingram in the offseason, that even a 7th round pick is too much to give away. I say, if he can help and if the Chiefs are actually in a race to win the AFC West, let’s do it. Otherwise, let’s pass. If K.C. loses to the NY Giants, K.C. has no business making a trade anyway.

TE Hyden Hurst

Hayden Hurst is the much maligned tight end for the Atlanta Falcons. He’s a two-sport athlete who has dealt with mental illness mixing pills with alcohol ending up handcuffed to his hospital bed because he’d attempted suicide. That was years ago now and although the Falcon traded for Hurst with the Ravens, Atlanta drafted all-World TE Kyle Pitts, making Hurst a possible trade piece. On Thursday, 810 talk-jock Soren Petro suggested Hurst would be a perfect fit for the K.C. offense giving Mahomes two big pass catching targets over the middle.

Hurst’s cap number for the 2021 season is $1.99M and paying him 10/17 of that amount looks like it would fit well within Brett Veach’s budget. If Hurst is truly available, Veach should make an effort o bring him in, because another target over the middle of the field is exactly what Mahomes needs to break out of his tendency to always look deep first.

DE Emmanuel Ogbah

In a piece for CBS Sports called, “One deal that each team should make; 32 scenarios for buyers and sellers” Cody Benjamin writes:

“Not only does Ogbah have familiarity with Kansas City, but he’s actually thriving off the edge right now. That should be music to the Chiefs’ ears, considering their defensive issues this year. Miami shouldn’t have a problem taking the call at 1-6.”

While some pundits offer trade ideas hat make sense financially, it’s hard to see Ogbah working out. He has a 2021 cap hit of $7.5M and if you divide that by 17 games you get approximately $441,000 per game and if oyu take that number and multiply it by the Chiefs remaining 10 games is becomes, $4.41M, which is obviously over the cap the Chiefs have available. Even if you only multiply what he’s owed per game by 9 games you get $3.966M, which is still a million more than K.C. has to spend.

Would Ogbah be a good fit? He be excellent, and especially because he’s been with the Chiefs previously. Ogbah has 17 combo tackles and has stared 6 of 7 games for the Dolphins this year. Is he even available? The Dolphins are currently 1-and-6 on the year and face the Bills this Sunday. If (when) they lose, which is likely, they may be looking to dump salary. So, that’s likely a yes, Ogbah is available.

Two years ago, K.C. traded Safety Eric Murray to the Cleveland Browns for Ogbah, so, they’ve already made a move in the past to secure his services and he played well while in K.C.. The problem with re-signing him was that he wanted too much money and it looks like he’s still out of the Chiefs ball park now. So, we’ll see.

WR Marvin Jones

Jon Conahan wrote a piece for ClutchPoints called, “2 best trades Chiefs must make before 2021 NFL Trade Deadline” in which he pin points both DE Emmanuel Ogbah and WR Marvin Jones as possible trade targets. It’s a popular theme that he CHiefs need a solid #2 WR and Jones could be that guy. Jones has 343 yards receiving this season and had 978 yards receiving for the Lions in 2020. Jones was a 5th round pick of the Bengals in 2021 and has 4.46 speed, but he’s 31 years old and has a contract that looks like it’s even more difficult to reconcile than Ogbah’s. He signed a 2-year deal with the Jags this offseason for $12.5M, with $9M guaranteed and $4M in incentives.

If the Chiefs really want another guy with good hands who is speedy at WR, they could turn RB Jerick McKinnon into a WR and he has 4.41 speed, plus he already knows Reid’s offensive playbook.

DE Trey Flowers

Brad Berreman wrote a piece this week for the SideLionReport called, “Lions trade rumors: Trey Flowers named a fit for the Chiefs” and he says:

“The Kansas City Chiefs are struggling, and the defense has been bad. Frank Clark has zero sacks in four games played this season, and overall they are tied for last in the league in sacks (eight). Going deeper, the Chiefs’ pass rush metrics (pressure rate, etc.) are not that bad. But Steve Spagnuolo’s unit needs help.”

The Lions are 0-and-7 and looking up at the Packers, Vikings and Bears in their division so there’s a better than likely chance the Lions are looking to make moves. Flowers just turned 28 years old and is still in his prime but his contract is prohibitive. He singed with he Lions two years ago when he Chiefs traded for Frank Clark, so a comparison is fair.

Clark has 14 sacks and 73 tackles since he signed with K.C.. Flowers has 10.5 sacks and 93 tackles sing he signed in Detroit. Although Clark signed for $105M Flower signed for $90M. Here’s what over he cap says about Flowers 2019 deal:

“Trey Flowers signed a five year, $90 million contract with the Lions. Flowers’ contract has $56 million in guarantees including $50 million guaranteed at signing. He received a $28.07 million signing bonus and has his 2019, 2020, and part of his 2021 salary guaranteed. If on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2021 league year he will receive a full guarantee on his 2021 salary and 2022 roster bonus.”

I’m not so sure Flowers would have been a better choice to begin with, and I see no way past this summary of his deal below (condensed from OvertheCap.com) or the $66,842,000 still owed to him in this deal:

The Chiefs still owe Frank Clark the $79.9M over the next three years so trading for Flowers appears to be an impossibility. However, who knows. Clark still has $18.5M guaranteed this year but it’s likely that he is cut this coming offseason. The Dead Money for Clark next year would be $13.6M, but his cap savings in 2022 would be $12.7M. in 2023 those figures are: $6.8M and $21.0M.
