Quarters: Chiefs Schedule In Four Pieces – 4th Quarter – The Kansas City Chiefs come in to the final quarter of the season with just one loss on their record. While it’s impossible to tell which teams will be good, by then, Chiefs remaining schedule looks relatively easy, on paper. They start with a game against an up and coming Miami Dolphins team who can put up a fight, but is probably more of a contender next year. After that, they continue their road swing with a trip to New Orleans. Drew Brees is hell bent on racking up one more championship, before he rides off into the sunset. The Chiefs finish the season at home against the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers. At this point, K.C. probably couldn’t miss the playoffs if they tried, but earning the one seed will require them to stay focused.
Week 14: @ Miami Dolphins
Dolphins HC Brian Flores is building a dominant defense, with an offense that’s slowly gathering some pieces. A dominant secondary will set the tone for a defense that should bear a lot of similarities to the New England Patriots. Fortunately for Patrick Mahomes, they don’t sport much of a pass rush at this point. Mahomes does enough and Chiefs defense shuts down the opposition. Chiefs win.
Key Player: Tyreek Hill
Against tight man coverage, Hill is Chiefs best player. While the Dolphins will certainly double him, the lack of a viable pass rush should give Hill time to get open, as Mahomes scrambles. This won’t be a stat building game for anyone, but Hill will have a handful of key catches that prove instrumental in Chiefs securing the lead.
Week 15: @ New Orleans Saints
Chiefs deal with the second of back-to-back road games this week, against one of the primary NFC Super Bowl contenders. Brees is an extremely football-smart QB and his impeccable accuracy and excellent timing, will be present a big challenge for the Chiefs defense. On the other side of the ball the Saints are solid, with a defense that ranked 11th in DVOA in 2019. I’d love for Mahomes to beat Brees, before he retires, but he might have to wait until the Super Bowl. Chiefs fight hard, but lose this game.
Key Player: Charvarius Ward
Michael Thomas is a force of nature. If the Chiefs want to have any shot at containing the Saints, they’ll have to keep him from making contested catches. Charvarius Ward is likely the man who will draw that assignment. Ward possesses the necessary physicality, but will have to show significant progression in his technique to limit Thomas. If he’s up to the challenge, K.C. will have a shot to win this game, but playing in the Super Dome still makes that a big ask.
Week 16 v Atlanta Falcons
Falcons HC Dann Quinn’s status will determine the tenure of this game. Players have demonstrated that they will fight hard for him, but he’s also on thin ice, after a couple of poor seasons. He may well be fired, by this point and his players checked out. Either way, Chiefs will come away with the win.
Key Player: Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Atlanta has a decent run defense, but they don’t have a Linebacker who is remotely capable of sticking with Edwards-Helaire. Andy Reid looks to get him going, in the passing game, heading into the playoffs. Should see a heavy dose of the rookie, to great effect, this week.
Week 17 v San Diego Chargers
The Chargers might not have a shot at the division, but, with an expanded field, they’ll probably make the playoffs. This will be an important game for them, and likely the first look Chiefs get at Justin Herbert. That will ultimately prove their undoing, as an experienced Chiefs defense forces multiple turnovers… leading to a game that doesn’t feel as close as their matchup early in the season. Chiefs win.
Key Player: Tyraan Mathieu
Mathieu is an extremely smart player, who know how to trick young QBs. Whether he’s making the plays himself, or setting other guys up, his presence will be felt all game. Hopefully fans will be able to be in the stands to enjoy it.
Chiefs Schedule: Conclusion
A lone loss, against the Saints, should not prevent the Chiefs from securing the one seed, and the lone AFC Playoff Bye. The Chargers and Dolphins will put up a good fight, but a great defense, without a viable offense, can only take you so far. Atlanta is a team in flux, and they could be a tough out or an easy win, but Mahomes has the talent, and the weapons, to overcome them regardless. The Chiefs finish the season 14-2 and begin their trek back to the Superbowl. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but the Chiefs should be well-positioned to repeat.
