“Snow” Body Does It Better: Chiefs Ice Broncos, 23-3

Winning in a Winter Wonderland

To the tune of “Walking in a WInter Wonderland”

Arrowhead roars, Big Red’s listening,

Lock’s wideouts, they kept missing

A beautiful sight, Pat’s passes in flight,

Winning in a winter wonderland.

Gone away are the boo birds,

Sure you’ve heard, there’s the new word

Hill, he goes long, and Kelce’s so strong

Winning in a winter wonderland.

At QB, we have got the best man,

Always good, on ev-er-y single down

We’ll say, “Are you real?” and he’ll say, “Yeah man,”

Can count on me as long as I’m around.

Reid and Spags, they conspire,

Cause the Chiefs, are on fire,

Of none they’re afraid, cause plans that they’ve made,

Winning in a winter wonderland.

If you suffered through the above, I applaud you and beg forgiveness… but I’m sometimes unable to stop myself. Yesterday’s snow bowl in Arrowhead Stadium was a football fan’s dream!  Particularly if you were watching from the warmth of your home with a cold beer or a hot toddy. In the midst of a winter storm, someone failed to inform QB Patrick Mahomes and his Kansas CIty Chiefs of the weather conditions as they played as if it were 80 degrees and sunny rather than below freezing during a very snowy snowstorm.

Mahomes had a characteristically stellar game with 27 completions on 34 attempts and two touchdowns for a 115.7 passer rating. Mahomes was no Grinch in spreading the ball around either, he zipped the ball to eight different Chiefs in yesterday’s game.

The ill-advised interception to Broncos safety Justin Simmons in the fourth quarter was decidedly uncharacteristic, however. TE Travis Kelce lived up to his nickname, Zeus, yesterday, too. The always-clutch Kelce hauled in 11 missiles from Mahomes for 142 yards (in 13 targets).

During the game, Travis Kelce also became the first (and only) tight end in NFL history to record four straight 1,000-yard seasons.

Teammate, WR Tyreek Hill, was the recipient of two of Mahomes TD passes, even running one into the tunnel, evoking flashbacks of Forrest Gump. Hill finished the game with 5 receptions for 67 yards (13.4 yards per reception).

Rookie RB Darwin Thompson showed flashes of gridiron greatness leading the Chiefs RBs with 38 yards on eight attempts for a 4.74 yards per attempt average. Now, it looks like he’ll be given more snaps moving forward.

Roads and Sunday events weren’t the only things shutdown in Kansas City yesterday, the avalanche of Chiefs defense absolutely shutdown the Denver Broncos offense and their quarterback, K.C. native Drew Lock.

The Red and Gold defense ruined QB Drew Lock’s homecoming, holding the rookie QB to just 18 completions on 40 attempts for 208 yards. The luckless Lock was also sacked twice and picked off once by fellow rookie Juan Thornhill once in the end zone. Lock finished the game with a 50.8% passer rating.

The big story of this game, once again, was the Chiefs Defense, which, blanketed the struggling Broncos offense the entire game, holding them to just 260 yards total offense. The bulk of that came during “trash time” at the end of the game when it was clearly out of hand. Chiefs defenders also recorded ten QB hits, three tackles for losses, and denied seven total Lock passes. Most importantly, the Chiefs defense held the Broncos to just 3 points.

Special Teams continued to improve, with kicker Harrison Butker good for three field goals. Butker’s point after attempt was sadly muffed by punter/holder Dustin “I’m No Mahomes” Colquitt. It mattered little though, as the Chiefs scored a two-point conversion on their second touchdown, thanks to the scrambling ability and quick-thinking of Magic Mahomes.

[Editor’s Note: It has now been suggested that Patrick Mahomes now be referred to as, “The Mailman”… because he delivers in the rain, snow and blizzard conditions, injured or in pain. I kind of like it. What do you think?]

While having to settle for three field goals in the red zone is, a wee bit disconcerting, this minimally takes away from an overwhelmingly dominating performance by the entire Chiefs team: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.  The Chiefs most pressing concern is the pectoral injury to DE Alex Okafor (note: no word at this time as to how seriousness). We can only hope it’s not a tear.

The Chiefs are now 11-4 and gelling at the exact right time in the regular season while looking ready to enter the playoffs, regardless of what seed they are. Yesterday, in Jack Frost’s playground, they looked the best they have all year… and this team clearly knows how to keep winning in a winter wonderland!
