The Chiefs Best Draft Fits Are: _____, _____.

David Bell

Happy Easter Day, for those who Celebrate

I see a lot of articles about this or that player. I have already written about WRs though not in detail. Previously I have covered the possibilities at LOT. My general observation is that the OTs who would fit perfectly in the Chiefs clubhouse are gone by Pick 3. At the same time, I’m looking at WRs who might still be on the board by the time the Chiefs make their selection, and there are a ton of worthy Candidates. In my view, unless a top-level pick in my exclusion lists falls to the Chiefs, Brett Veach will draft a WR in round one. Sure, I can see a DT being among the top three choices, but it’s not my primary focus. I would like to see the Chiefs select a WR that can add back the over-the-top game Missing since Tyreek Hill departed. The candidate WR must complement the skillset of Rashee Rice as well.

Why OG, you might ask? LOG Joe Thuney suffered a major injury, is 32 in November, and has a hefty cap hit to boot. Also, the Chiefs did not retain OG/C, and all-everything backup, Nick Allegretti. That exposure needs to be managed now rather than in the 2025 offseason. Get the young player on board to work with Thuney to prepare that young man to succeed Joe himself.

Here are my Candidates for Pick 32 — or earlier if a WR, which is the missing ingredient — an over-the-top WR, for Patrick Mahomes.

I have watched enough films to believe several players will fit well. I exclude the very top choices as beyond the reach of the Chiefs. Here are the WRs who I am excluding:

This last WR is the one that Nate Taylor trades up to select in his Mock 2.0 at The Athletic (subscription required). He (Adonai Mitchell) is also my first target and has been for a long time now. Don’t get me wrong, I also like the speedy Xavier Worthy for example, but Mitchell checks all the boxes including speed, even though he’s a tenth of a second slower than Worthy. He is a worthwhile selection and more physical pick in the second grouping of WRs. Plus, he has been my top target all along. Here is his RAS score:

Keon Coleman is my third choice for a WR if… Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell are both gone. I am not denigrating receivers who are lesser ranked. No other WRs will get drafted in round one is my take. Nate Taylor’s logic is sound –> trade up to pick 25 to select Mitchell. The thing you’ve got to love is his size and height: 6-foot-2, 205 lbs. coupled with his 40 time of 4.34. He is not as fast as Xavier Worthy, but checks the boxes all the same. He is feisty, makes contested catches, and can break loose on deep routes. I am not exactly sure who my second WR selection would be, but I still like what Xavier Worthy brings to the table.

Worthy as an over-the-top solution could well be the answer, if he dropped into Veach’s lap and Mitchell was gone. So,,, if it came down to another selection, at least for me, it would be Worthy. However, Keon Coleman would be an alternative if both Mitchell and Worthy were already gone and K.C. has decided they will be going the WR route in the first round.

If it were an OT in the first round, it would be a similar problem to WRs: How many OTs will be taken in round one? That’s what makes the first-round choice for Brett Veach so tough. The question is, who is left by the late first round? I have seen speculation that as many as eight OTs would go in round one. My exclusion list of OL who will be gone include:

I think ranking Guyton in this list is a miss. I like Patrick Paul over Guyton by far. I’ll explain below. If you count them, there are 8 OTs in this list which would fit what I have read and researched about: 8 possible OT’s elected in round one. I am not sure that any of the 2nd four would be the player I’d covet. If there were among the four, I’d choose Guyton out of OU. As you can see, there are questions, but I trust the OU Training of Offensive Linemen and obviously so do the Chiefs, since they’ve taken Creed Humphrey and Wanya Morris recently. Still, I like the idea of Patrick Paul being the OT choice. See Guyton and Paul’s RAS below.

I wrote previously about Veach making the OT pick in round 2 in that of U of H Left Offensive Tackle, Patrick Paul. In the article, I proposed trading out of round one, gaining another pick, and selecting Paul who is already a LOT. See that article, here –> For GM Brett Veach, the Struggle Has Just Begun.

I’d propose this still, but would presume that the Chiefs would use available Cap funds for a veteran LOT which… we have one of those that is a good candidate: Donovan Smith. By re-signing Donovan or hiring another Free Agent, the OL would have a leg up, especially if Smith were brought back. It would allow Paul — if he were the choice — to have an NFL break-in time and he could then be far more prepared for the 2025 season.

That’s how I see Brett Veach using the first two draft picks. I like the idea that Nate Taylor presented with his Mock 2.0: trade up to #25 to get WR AD Mitchell. Taylor outlines an intriguing step-by-step move of trading up to pick #25 and then trading back to pick #27. If Mitchell is the Chiefs WR crush, by all means, ensure that you can secure his services. Then see where I reference trading back and selecting Patrick Paul in round three.

We’ll see what happens, eh? What do you think?
