Veach: A Peach of a Guy

The Kansas City Chiefs new General Manager Brett Veach is still in his honeymoon year but all signs tell us he didn’t marry into this agreement just to “F” around… he’s really bringing the Love, with a capital “L.”

When Chiefs owner, Clark Hunt, re-signed head Andy Reid and simultaneously chose to not renew GM John Dorsey last summer… the consequential internal hiring of Brett Veach was a non-starter. Fans were buzzing for months about the parting of the ways with Dorsey or even the odd timing of it plus the 5-year extension of Reid in the face of Dorsey’s departure were hard moves for fans to wrap their heads round. So, the eventual hiring of Veach almost seemed like a way to appease the masses but as far as a story of interest… it was an afterthought.

Not any more.

  • Brett Veach orchestrated a trade of ILB Reggie Ragland. An A+ trade by most fan’s standards. Especially when you consider the ILB position was such a position of need at the time.
  • Then Veach orchestrated a trade for OL Cameron Erving, a player who was under-performing but has much greater potential. Until we see how Erving is developed and coached-up this offseason we’ll have to give this trade a C+.
  • Veach also traded what appeared to be one backup ILB for another bringing Kevin Pierre-Lewis to the Chiefs and all “on-field” indications are that this trade is an A+ so far. KPL looks like he may end up being the long term replacement for the much beloved Derrick Thomas.
  • Now, Veach has gotten the Washington Redskins to include perhaps their best defender, Kendall Fuller, in a trade for Alex Smith. The 22 year-old Fuller enters his 3 season in 2018 and an injury his senior year of college kept him from being taken in the first round of the 2016 draft, where he went in the 3rd round to Washington. The inclusion of Fuller — plus a 3rd round pick in the 2018 draft — has to make this trade an A++ trade.

Now, we still need to see how Brett Veach performs on draft weekend, but all signs are pointing up for this Kansas City peach of a guy!
