Possible NFL Cuts the Chiefs Could Jump On

Possible NFL Cuts the Chiefs Could Jump On – Here are some of the possible cuts I’ve heard suggested that Brett Veach might want to take some action on, as well as some possible trades.

Duke Dawson, CB, and Obi Melifonwu, S, Patriots

“Dawson and Melifonwu aren’t household names and haven’t been in the league long, but each was seemingly destined for bigger things not long ago. Melifonwu, a 2017 second-round pick for the Raiders, hasn’t been able to turn his otherworldly athleticism into a consistent role in the NFL. While he played a minor role in the Pats’ Super Bowl run after being released by Jon Gruden, his inability to grasp complex coverage schemes could outweigh his special teams value for the Pats.

Dawson’s tenure in New England may come and go without playing a single regular season snap. Bill Belichick invested the 56th pick of the 2018 draft on the slot cornerback, only to see him miss his rookie season due to injury. He hasn’t been able to keep up with the Patriots’ starters this preseason, and while he’s been trending upward recently he may not have the repertoire needed to crack a deep defensive back rotation in his second year.”

Dwayne Allen, TE, Miami Dolphins

“After guaranteeing Allen $1.25 million this offseason, it’s possible that GM Chris Grier and coach Brian Flores have found their first joint personnel misfire.”

Kiko Alonso and Raekwon McMillan, LBs, Miami Dolphins

“Look for Dolphins general manager Chris Grier to aggressively churn his roster over the next week. Alonso and McMillan are now backups and don’t quite fit the system. Alonso appears to have a better chance to stick as a backup or inspire trade interest.”

Lano Hill, DB, Seattle Seahawks

“Michigan Wolverines fans remember him as Delano Hill (he formally changed his name after leaving school). He’s played 28 games in two seasons in Seattle and even earned a starting spot last year before a hip injury sidelined him. The Seahawks are overhauling the secondary and Hill appears to be a likely casualty. His coverage skills are better than his tackling.”

Maurice Canady, CB, Baltimore Ravens

“A sixth-round pick out of Virginia in 2016, Canady has struggled to stay healthy in his three seasons in Baltimore. He has played well when given an opportunity, notably in run support and blitzing off the corner. Canady has length (he’s a legit 6-2), closing burst and experience on special teams. “

Mason Schreck, TE, Cincinnati Bengals

“He blossomed as a senior playmaker with Tyree Jackson as his QB. He’s been injured for most of his two seasons in Cincinnati, a team that seems to chronically have problems keeping tight ends healthy. If the Bengals cut Schreck, he’s worthy of a tire kick as a do-it-all TE with sticky hands and a mean streak as an inline blocker.”

Seth DeValve, TE, Cleveland Browns

“Our nation’s preeminent Browns fan has conjured up visions of DeValve running free as a member of the New England Patriots, so who am I to question one of Marc’s famous Sesslers?” -Gregg Rosenthal

Trade Possibilities:

    • Artie Burns, CB, Pittsburgh Steelers
    • Ken Crawley, CB, New Orleans Saints
    • Vernon Davis, TE, Washington Redskins
    • Ereck Flowers, OT, Washington Redskins
    • Joshua Garnett, OG, San Francisco 49ers
    • Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB, Washington Redskins
    • Reggie Ragland, LB, Kansas City Chiefs*

*Note: notice that Reggie Ragland is listed as a trade possibility for other teams.

Then, we can look at it from the standpoint of: what is the greatest need for the Chiefs, after all is said and done, with the offseason and preseason?

Kansas City Chiefs: Cornerback

“Landing Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade (swindle?) with the Skins was brilliant, but I’m not sure Bashaud Breeland, another ex-Skin, is going to hold up on the other side. Adding Mo Claiborne is a nod toward addressing this concern, I guess, but I figure teams will put them in nickel and dime a ton and unless this pass rush is top 10 this could be an area that screams out for a trade between now and the deadline.”

Over the next month we should be taking a look at the teams with the smallest amount of Cap Dollars to spend because those are the teams most likely to make a salary dump, in the form of a player with an expensive contract. Here are the bottom 12 in cap space.

In yellow, the bottom 5 are in the need of a fix, and this weekend may provide that opportunity. The Chiefs have $21.0M in cap space but, if they cut Carlos Hyde, which is likely, that number jumps to $22.5M. Go Chiefs!
