The Chiefs Draft Day Two: OPEN THREAD

by Laddie Morse, April 26, 2019

The Chiefs Draft Day Two, now this should be worth waiting for. After all, the Kansas City Chiefs will get to select a prospect 3 time this evening… or trade away those picks. Speaking of trades, last nights round one in Nashville started out slowly trade-wise with only one trade from picks 1-to-16. However, from pick #17 onward, 13 trades took place, including the Chiefs trade with Seattle on Tuesday.

The first round trend was well apparent as 13 of the first round picks were defensive line related. Only 1 RB was taken in the 1st round, Josh Jacobs, by the Oakland Raiders. There was also only 1 CB taken, Deandre Baker, by the New York Giants. Two Safeties were selected including: Darnell Savage by Green Bay and Johnathan Abrams by Oakland.

With only 3 DBs taken on day one of the draft, it bodes well for the Chiefs as they need to come away with a good corner at the very least. The two best TEs in this draft were both from Iowa and were taken in the first, but that leaves a deep class of tight ends for the Chiefs to choose from and hopefully they can come away with a good one at that position as well.

Here are the lists I’ve prepared of the players still available in this draft based upon the prospects that ESPN has published:

The Chiefs will be selecting at #61, #63 and #84 tonight and that’s why I have circled those numbers in red… and not because I favor those prospects. The position in red are the positions I predict that the Chiefs will/should target tonight. Ideally, I’d love to see the Chiefs come away with Byron Murphy (or Rock Ya-Sin), Chauncey Gardner-Johnson (or Nasir Adderley), Jace Sternberger, Terry McLaurin and Erik McCoy… on the other hand, that appears impossible.  That means that Brett Veach most likely will have to narrow it down the three picks.

Although I like several of these players, if Veach can trade back and pick up an extra pick in the 3rd or 4th round, it would be helpful because of the teams increased needs right now.

I originally thought it would be great if the Chiefs could pick up a RB like David Montgomery but there are enough quality RBs already on the roster to offset any needs that might arise from the loss of Kareem Hunt. However, the team needs a good #2 Tight End and with Kelce in rehab from his offseason surgery, that becomes an imperative. The Chiefs brass likely knows they have an imperative at WR now as well so if they take one, you’ll know the answer to any questions you may be having about that situation.

To configure your own ideas of where Veach could trade up or down the board, here’s a trade chart to use for your calculations:
